10 Best Family-Friendly Movies To Stream Now

Frozen, The Lion King, Toy Story and Shrek are undeniably top choices when it comes to the best family-friendly movies. However, if you're up for some fresh picks and perhaps an undiscovered golden oldie or two here are my absolute faves. These are the movies my family can't get enough of, so pop the corn, don the onesies and snuggle up to any one of these fantastic flicks!

Best family-friendly movies - in no particular order!

Moana

With a soundtrack to beat Frozen's, "Moana" is a pretty epic movie to kick off this round-up of the best family-friendly movies. Set in the beautiful islands of Polynesia, "Moana" tells the story of a brave young girl who sets sail on a daring voyage to save her people. Moana is different from your average Disney Princess so this movie will appeal to boys just as much as girls.

The movie boasts breathtaking animation as it tells a story about courage and the power of nature. Oh, and Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement lends his voice to Tamatoa, a giant coconut crab. What's not to love?

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile

Based on the beloved children's book by Bernard Waber, "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" tells the charming tale of a friendly singing crocodile who lives in a New York City apartment building. With a whimsical storyline and lovable characters, "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" uses real-time VFX to bring to life the dancing and singing crocodile for a musical that will charm the pants of kids and adults alike.

Luca

This heartwarming Pixar film follows the adventures of a young sea monster named Luca as he finds himself on land in human form to explore the Italian Riviera. He meets Alberto, a fellow sea monster child and discovers the true meaning of friendship and acceptance. The film's stunning animation, moving story and memorable characters make "Luca" a great family-friendly movie and an easy-breezy watch for a laid-back Sunday afternoon.

Coco

Set in Mexico during the Day of the Dead festival, "Coco" tells the story of a young boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family's objections. Filled with vibrant colours, lively music, and themes of family, culture, and remembrance, "Coco" is a visually dazzling and emotionally resonant film that will appeal to audiences of all ages.

Here are a few impressive stats: "Coco" is the first movie with an all-Latino cast, grossing over eight hundred million dollars worldwide. It clinched two Oscars and is the biggest blockbuster in Mexican history, and so thoroughly deserves its place in my top ten best family-friendly movies.

Megamind

"Megamind" follows the adventures of a brilliant supervillain voiced by the legendary Will Ferrell. After defeating his long-time nemesis, Metro Man, Megamind soon discovers that life without a hero to oppose him lacks fulfillment. As he navigates his new role as the unlikely hero of Metro City, Megamind forms an unexpected bond with Roxanne Ritchi, a tenacious reporter voiced by Tina Fey. Together, they confront challenges, including the rise of the bumbling superhero-turned-villain, Tighten, voiced by Jonah Hill.

Filled with humour, action-packed sequences and memorable characters, the film delivers a powerful message about self-acceptance and redemption.

Wreck-It Ralph

This animated Disney film takes viewers on a wild adventure through the world of 8-bit style of video games from the 80s. There's a whole heap of real-life retro throwback refs adults will love, from Tapper and Paperboy to Pacman and Sonic. Ralph, a video game villain, dreams of becoming a hero. He journeys across different game worlds to prove himself while accidentally unleashing a deadly enemy that threatens the whole arcade.

Super Mario Bros.: The Movie

Based on the iconic video game series, "Super Mario Bros.: The Movie" brings the beloved characters Mario and Luigi to life in a live-action adventure. Join Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi as they are transported through a familiar green pipe to a magical new world. They find themselves on an epic mission to rescue Princess Peach from evil Bowser. Another colourful bonanza of a movie that will appeal to both young and old.

Matilda

While I'm a bigger fan of the original movie, my kids absolutely adore the 2022 release, Matilda, the Musical. Follow five-year-old Matilda Wormwood as she discovers the gift of telekinesis, using her imagination and intelligence to triumph over adversity and fight against injustice. Children will be enchanted by catchy musical numbers (adults less so, after the umpteenth time the kids will subject you to them) and lively choreography. What is guaranteed is that the entire family will appreciate the timeless charm of this famous Roald Dahl story.

Sing

Believe me, the kids will love this one. With its vibrant animation, catchy chart music covers, and endearing characters, "Sing" follows a group of animals who take part in an X-Factor-inspired singing competition to follow their dreams. Through its memorable characters and toe-tapping musical numbers, "Sing" inspires viewers to believe in themselves and pursue their passions. The sequel stars Bono from U2, so it's worth settling down for a double header. An excellent addition to any family's movie collection.

The Sea Beast

The Sea Beast is my current top pick when it comes to kids' animated movies and I'm not alone -  this film is a firm favourite of my whole family - grandparents included.

In a time when scary sea beasts ruled the waves, monster hunters were celebrated heroes — and Jacob Holland was the biggest star of them all. Join young Maisie Brumble as she sneaks onto Jacob's ship for an exhilarating adventure into uncharted waters. They encounter unexpected allies and confront challenges that push their courage and beliefs to the limit. Brace yourself for breathtaking visuals and a gripping storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat, all while you fall instantly fond of the movie's heartfelt characters.

That's it folks, there you have it! Ten great family-friendly films to stream on your next mammoth movie marathon. Oh, and if you're after more, don't forget Tangled; it is a fantastic film and one of my all-time favourites!
