Prams, strollers, buggies, pushchairs, are some of the most essential aspects of parenting but they come with so much jargon and variety that many parents simply can't cope with. With so many out there, it can be difficult to identify the best option for you and also your child, so here we've taken our pick of the bunch to make things simple for you wonderful parents to find the option for you.
Pushchairs: Suitable for my newborn?
A lot of our members ask us from time to time if pushchairs are fine for a newborn child? We would say no. Pushchair are not suitable for your little one until they are around 6 months old.
The NHS website says “Pushchairs, also known as strollers and buggies, are only suitable for young babies if they have fully reclining seats so your baby can lie flat. Wait until your baby can sit by themselves before using another type of pushchair. Choose a light pushchair if you'll be lifting it on to trains or buses.”
There are pushchairs we’ve chosen that have a carrycot that enjoy a lie-flat position. Other options we list don’t have an additional carrycot as they recline into a lie-flat position.
Some members have also asked us why are there some pushchairs that don’t look like they have lie-flat functionality? Some pushchairs lie-flat function goes to 150 degrees which is the legal requirement while others offer the full 180 degrees.
Which Magazine confirms that the best prams are manufactured to at least 150 degrees –
“The best pushchairs for newborn babies are those with a recline of 150 degrees or more on the lowest setting.”
Are Carrycots a good option for my baby?
Carrycots are great and one of their main benefits is that they are parent facing. Meaning you can keep an eye on your little one in the first few stages of their life. They also offer a touch of luxury and comfort within the pushchair. Making it easier for your baby to sleep and generally relax.
Parents can have a peaceful journey when travelling with their baby without disturbing them. There is the function of removing the carrycot out of the pushchair without waking your baby up.
An additional carrycot can be expensive. From around £90 up to just under £300. If don’t want to reuse it for another baby you have then it’s a decision whether the price is worth it or not. We do think that the best prams will be comfortable with or without a carrycot in any case.
What other things to look out for when looking to buy the best pram for my new baby?
Wheels – We know some of the best times we have with our newborn are on those first walks we go together. With that said it’s important when purchasing a pushchair that they are durable and able to withstand the outdoor elements. It's important to have a pushchair with big wheels. Making it easier to navigate uneven pavement and other types of terrain. Solid wheels are the safe option as they avoid punctures.
Save money with a double option pushchair – We all know having a baby is expensive and it’s good to save where we can as every penny counts. If you have twins or thinking of adding to your family a pushchair with the added option of a double buggy or carrycot is worth thinking about. With another carrycot, it means it’s also suitable for overnight sleeping. They will also be built to take the weight of two children so it’s important to know these types of buggies will be heavier.
The folding of a pram or pushchair: Most folding options on pushchairs are easy to get your head around and our reviews of the best prams and pushchairs will give you a deeper understanding of how easy or difficult the fold is.
Having a basket to carry baby essentials: The basket size is important. We know when we’re on the move we have lots of baby items to carry around with us. That’s why it’s a real gem when we have a large basket. This is what makes the best prams and pushchairs. To also note; some pushchairs make the basket easier to access than others so bear that in mind too.
Pushchairs with a travel system is essential for some parents too. Find out right here the best travel system for this year.
What is a travel system?
A travel system can be a lifesaver when travelling around with your new baby. A travel system is all in the name. It’s a pushchair with a car seat attached. It’s all about not waking your baby up coz we know an awoken baby is an unhappy, potentially crying baby. Nightmare!
A travel system enables you to move a sleeping baby from the car onto a pram or pushchair frame without waking them. It’s important to note that not all pushchairs can be transformed into travel systems. Some come as one – all together. Others come separate where you need to buy such things as a car seat and pushchair. This can mean more expense. Another point to think about with a travel system is that not all car seats fit all cars. Make sure you choose a car seat that fits in the car before a pushchair or travel system. Buying a travel system compatible with a car seat can be hard to find.
