Diary of a Dad: Week 39 - Post-Covid Holidays

For a lot of us, it’s been a while since we’ve gone away with our kids. Covid has royally screwed up travelling for some time and we’re going to be making the most of being able to get away when we can.

I forgot how much there is to it though! It’s mental when you start thinking how long it’s been and how many things there are to get sorted.

Firstly, and most importantly, the passports. They need to be in date and I’m pretty sure our eldest must be close to his running out now. It blows my mind how quickly that’s happened - Bois for him though as the picture was a shocker! The admin of a holiday is something I haven’t missed at all. I swear the airlines are making up new charges too…just saying.

Picking your destination is really important isn't it? I feel like sun, but actually, I'll take pretty much anything that will give me a change from the monotony of what we have been going through over the past two years. I'm really not going to be fussy, but I just hope it does what it says on the tin!

Next, I need to remember what to actually take on a holiday. I mean, I can’t remember the last time I was properly hot…like, what am I going to wear? Are the things I’ve got even still remotely fashionable (I doubt they ever were, seahorse shorts rarely are) and where the hell are they?! They’ve not been out for ages. I’m going to need to dig through.

One of my biggest worries is how the kids will cope with flying…I’m still gutted we didn’t get a free flight for the youngest (first world problems.) it’ll go one of two ways, they’ll either be mint, or a fucking nightmare. In fairness, they’ll most likely take turns, proper tag team it and drive the whole plane crazy. I mean what is there no to love about two mental kids in a confined space for a prolonged period of time?!

The world is just a bit different now. News outlets and holiday companies are touting normality, but I guess there’s always going to be a part of us now thinking about the virus and what it means for when we get to different places. Do they want tourists there? Is it safe? Will we get ill- I know you can’t worry forever but there are considerations now you didn’t have to make before.

Anyway…it’s exciting to think we might get a break in this year after the mental mess of the past couple of summers. Fingers crossed.
