Autumn is my most favourite season of the year. It always has been. I love the dark nights. Cosying up on the sofa with a good book, a few candles and a glass of vino. Ha, I wish! That was pre-kids! Post-kids means no free time and a lounge that resembles a toy shop. But it does mean we go all-out at Halloween now. And I love Halloween! Less so the trick or treating but I really enjoy decorating the home with all things spooky.
To get us in the mood for the witching season, I’m sharing a few tips on how to decorate your home. You don’t need to spend much, and you can make it as tacky as you want with all those creepy decorations. Or opt for a more sophisticated autumn and Halloween look. I tend to go for more autumn vibes.
Pumpkins
You can’t go wrong with a pumpkin or two. I personally love the smaller gourds and squash which you can pick up for a couple of quid in the supermarkets. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to carving them and tend to leave them whole. I use them to decorate sideboards and the fireplace.
I also LOVE these wooden pumpkins which I picked up in Sainsbury’s a few years ago. They come out of the loft every October and look great anywhere in the home.
Free Gifts from Nature
So think conkers, pine cones, leaves, sticks, chestnuts and acorns. It is the perfect excuse to get out and about in your local woods if the weather allows. I love to use natural items around the home. And conkers are supposed to ward off those pesky spiders aren’t they?!
Bunting and Signs
Bunting is fun any time of the year. You can pick up Halloween themed bunting online or in any of the high street shops. It can transform a dresser or a window. You could even make it if you have time and are that way inclined!
You can also pick up loads of Halloween themed signs which make the house that little bit spooky. We have a few zombie and witch signs that adorn the dresser in the kitchen!
Candles
Don’t forget to add candles to tables and windowsills. They bring warmth to a home and make it feel super cosy on those dark evenings. If you’re on a budget, Home Bargains do a lovely Halloween candle. And it smells amazing! You don’t have to spend a lot. And if you have little ones at home or don’t trust yourself to remember to blow them out, opt for LED candles.
