Knowing when to begin weaning can be confusing, especially with so much advice out there. However, the NHS recommends starting at around six months, as this is when babies are typically ready for solid foods. At six months, babies need more than just milk to meet their nutritional needs, especially when it comes to iron.
They should also be showing interest in what you're eating and be able to pick up food and put it in their mouth. It's important not to rush the process. Every baby is different, so even if your baby is showing interest at five months, it’s best to hold off until closer to six months unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.
If you're unsure, a chat with your health visitoror GP can help you decide when to start. Remember, there's no rush – your baby will get there when they’re ready.
